Your packing list depends heavily on the season. Summer temperatures average 33.9°C in January, requiring serious sun protection. Winter and early mornings call for an extra layer to handle the chill.

What clothes should I wear to Wave Rock?

Wear lightweight, breathable clothing for the daytime, and pack a light jacket for early mornings or winter visits.

Dressing in layers works best in the Wheatbelt region. Temperatures peak in the afternoon but drop significantly after sunset. Avoid heavy fabrics during the warmer months. If you plan to visit at dawn to see the rock's colors, you will need a jacket.

What are the best shoes for Wave Rock?

You need sturdy, enclosed walking shoes with good grip.

The site features several walking tracks, including a 1.7-kilometer loop to Hippo's Yawn. The granite surfaces around the rock and The Humps can be uneven. Sandals and thongs offer little protection against the rough terrain or hot ground.

How do I protect myself from the outback sun?

Wear a broad-brimmed hat and apply high SPF sunscreen regularly.

Shade is limited along the walking trails connecting the main cliff to Mulka's Cave and Lake Magic. The sun reflects off the light-colored granite, increasing your UV exposure. Reapply sunscreen every few hours, especially during summer visits.

How much water should I pack?

Bring at least two liters of drinking water per person.

Hydration is critical during the 4-hour drive from Perth and while walking around the Main Rock Area. There are limited places to refill water bottles on the walking trails themselves. Keep extra water in your vehicle if you are driving yourself.

Do I need a fly net for Wave Rock?

Yes, a fly net is highly recommended during the warmer months.

Bush flies are common in the Western Australian outback from late spring through summer. A head net that fits over your hat will make your walk along the Gnamma Trail much more comfortable. They are inexpensive and take up very little space.

What camera gear should I bring?

Pack a camera with a wide-angle lens to capture the entire rock formation.

Wave Rock is 110 meters long and 15 meters high. A standard lens often fails to fit the entire curved cliff face into a single frame. If you bring a drone, WA Parks guidelines dictate you must keep it at least 30 meters away from other visitors.
